Beauty of Maths explored!

1 September 2005

The sixth National Mathematics Week will take place from 5 to 9 September 2005 at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg.

This initiative is sponsored by the Telkom Foundation under the auspices of the South African Mathematics Foundation [SAMF] and in collaboration with the Departments of Education and Science and Technology.

The week "aims to highlight the beauty, purpose and significance of mathematics and also dispels the myth that this subject is difficult, cold, and only accessible to a few super-intelligent human beings," says Prof. Mamokgethi Setati, SAMF Chairperson.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Mohamed Enver Surty, and the Gauteng MEC for Education, Angy Motshekga, will officially open the week on Monday.

Prof. Setati continues: "All teachers, learners and parents are invited to visit the Sci-Bono Centre between 5 and 9 September to celebrate and enjoy mathematics. The programme includes a wide range of mathematics games, workshops for teachers and learners, mathematics exhibitions, career guidance and talks by South Africans who have succeeded in this discipline.

"Also on offer are competitions, mathematical puzzles, quizzes and investigations. Prizes include computers, scientific calculators, and geometers' sketchpads."

Entrance to all activities is FREE but booking is necessary as space is limited. Phone or email Cynthia Malinga at (011) 832 3360 or e-mail to book.
