South Africa's top Science Olympiad achievers jet off to the London International Youth Science Forum
27 July 2004
Five top science learners, winners of the Ispat Iscor National Science Olympiad, jet off to London tonight to attend the London International Youth Science Forum.
The five top winners are Elizna Rossouw of the Hoërskool Brandwag in the Eastern Cape, Elsabe Smit of the Hoërskool Hermanus, Marc Baggenstos of the Deutsche Internationale Schule in Cape Town, Nashvin Gangaram of the Stanger Manor High School in KwaZulu-Natal and Rambani Raphulu of the Mbilwi Secondary School in Limpopo.
They will be travelling to the London International Youth Science Forum through sponsorships from Iscor, the British Council and the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA). The event takes place from 28 July to 11 August 2004 and attracts approximately 250 learners each year from over 60 countries.
An exciting week comprising seminars, excursions, lectures and debates on scientific issues awaits participants where they will exchange ideas and insights into science and its application for the benefit of all people.
The Ispat Iscor National Science Olympiad is a project of SAASTA, a business unit of the National Research Foundation, aimed at learners in grades 10 - 12, with the aim of stimulating interest and competitive participation in science and creating special opportunities for learners who perform well.
The key financial contribution made by the country's leading steel producer, Iscor Limited, has allowed the reach and impact of the Olympiad to be increased significantly this year. Apart from a substantial amount of funding for the operational support of the Olympiad, Iscor's sponsorship has made it possible for top performers and participators to be awarded with exciting prizes including computers, scientific calculators, books and cash prizes.
Participation in the Ispat Iscor National Science Olympiad promotes interest in science and may open the door to an exciting future in the field. Schools are invited to contact the SAASTA for information about the next Ispat Iscor National Science Olympiad.
