National Science, Engineering and Technology Week 2003
29 January 2003
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will host its annual National Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Week from 5 to 10 May 2003.
National SET Week has become South Africa's premier celebration of science, engineering and technology; featuring events open to the public, initiated by the Department of Science and Technology and managed by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).
National SET Weeks provide a framework for those involved in promoting the public understanding of science, engineering and technology (PUSET), as well as to showcase a broad variety of activities aimed at increasing the public's understanding and appreciation of science, engineering and technology. It is also provides an opportunity to reach those members of the public not normally part of the scientific and technological community.
Fascinating, informative and entertaining events will take place in all nine provinces as part of the celebrations. These will include exhibitions, displays, interactive lectures and talks, demonstrations, workshops, science shows, etc.
Since 2000, National SET Week has set a strong and consistent record of raising public awareness of science, engineering and technology.
The success of the Year of Science and Technology in 1998, has served as a platform for the Department of Science and Technology to continue to maintain public awareness around SET issues. This year National SET Week 2003 is positioned to be bigger, better, and more imaginative, with celebrations taking place in all nine provinces.
