Projects

  • National Science Olympiad
SAASTA funds and coordinates the National Science Olympiad running in its 44th year in 2008. The Olympiad aims to promote the participation of Grade 10-12 learners in the sciences, with the aim of encouraging them to pursue careers in science. The Olympiad comprises two sections - physical science (ie physics and chemistry) and biology. Learners are given the option of writing either physical science or biology. The overall project includes the administration of an examination, the hosting of a Youth Science Week and an Awards Ceremony for top performers. There is also the sponsorship of a few learners to attend the International Youth Science Forum in London.

  • National Science Week
National Science Week (NSW), will be held from 10 May 2008 to 17 May 2008, is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) which aims to excite the youth with science at an early age and to encourage them to develop an interest in studying mathematics and science subjects. While placing emphasis on the youth, awareness is also created among those sectors of society bearing an influence on the subject and career choices of learners.

  • Primary Science Day
Primary Science Day (PSD) is a designated day, devoted to promoting science in primary schools. It is based on a model which has been a huge success in Ireland. Currently, South Africa is statistically ranked as one of the weakest countries in science and mathematics, particularly in the junior grades. In seeking to address this status, it is imperative that an interest and understanding of mathematics and science is inculcated in the younger learners.
